Is it Selfish Ambition or God’s Blessing?

In a “me” centered culture obsessed with selfies and self-promotion, the lines are often blurred regarding what’s acceptable, and what’s downright obnoxious!  In the Gospel of Matthew we see a story of selfish ambition unfold. Jesus teaches a powerful lesson through the brothers, James and John, as they ask for the favored position of sitting at His right- and left-hand in heaven.  To make matters worse, they had their mother initially ask the question!

Pride Principle #1: Heathy ambition isn’t wrong, but selfish ambition is pride wrapped with fake motives. Selfish ambition will always put personal gain above God’s glory.

After hearing their request, Jesus asked if they were able to “drink from his cup,” which indicated their future would be a lot harder than they anticipated. Ignorantly, they said, “We are able.” Jesus knew they would one day suffer because of their faith, but they craved the attention and platform—and had no respect for God’s future and plan.

Pride Principle #2: When someone is speaking from a posture of pride, God’s timing and plan are second to pushing themselves to the front—no matter who they hurt in the process.

Earlier that day Jesus began to share that He would soon be beaten, mocked, and die for the sake of man. Instead of ministering to Him, or making sure He was ok with what He explained, they used that time to posture themselves for promotion. The other disciples were indignant and frustrated with their lack of sensitivity.

Pride Principle #3: When we act from a posture of pride, we annoy those around us.

Instead of bringing people together, selfish ambition pushes them apart. Only humility and patiently waiting for God alone to elevate—will truly satisfy.
