Do You Wish To Get Well?
There are certain chapters of the Bible that have the power to reframe our mind, bodies and spirits. Today’s episode features one of these watershed chapters.
In the Gospel of John 5 we see Jesus walk towards a pool in the center of town. It was big, with five large columns, and all kinds of desperate people laying around it. The blind, lame, sick and withered gathered by the pool with the hope that a myth they believed about an angel stirring the waters, could heal their infirmities and change their lives.
Jesus walked straight towards a man who’d been lying there for 38 years and said, “Do you wish to get well?”
The man instantly had excuses explaining why he couldn’t get in the water. He blamed others for pushing ahead of him and obviously was stuck in a cycle of blame and victimization.
Jesus looked at him and told him to: GET UP… take up his mat… and walk!
When Jesus tells us to “get up” we need to realize we can’t change and stay lying in our old patterns. We have to get up and be ready to move in a different way.
By taking up our mat, we’re actually tucking what we used to lie on and carry it around as our new testimony. We’re no longer stuck on this mat. Things have changed! We are free to walk in a new way towards new places.
Like this man, sometimes we’re asking the wrong questions. His question shouldn’t have been, “How can I get in that water?” but rather, “How can I truly be free?”
